Statement 'Dudu Tassa & Jonny Greenwood'
Afgelopen tijd hebben we vanuit diverse personen en organisaties vragen ontvangen over het programmeren van ‘Dudu Tassa & Jonny Greenwood’ op Lowlands 2024, naar aanleiding van hun gezamenlijk uitgebrachte album ‘Jarak Qaribak’.

Op internet zijn video’s gepost waarop te zien is dat Dudu Tassa optreedt met het orkest van het IDF, in het bijzijn van de Israëlische president Yitzhak Herzog en nadat hij vierhonderd gitaren heeft weggegeven aan het IDF. Er circuleren ook beelden van een optreden van Tassa voor mensen in militair uniform. Deze video’s roepen vragen en onduidelijkheid op over de positie van Tassa en Greenwood in het Israëlisch-Palestijns conflict.
Ook wij hebben deze video’s en berichtgeving gezien, en hadden hierdoor de nodige vragen. Daarom is er uitgebreid contact geweest met het management en de vertegenwoordigers van Dudu Tassa en Jonny Greenwood. Op basis hiervan is besloten het optreden op Lowlands doorgang te laten vinden. Onze overwegingen en gedachten hierbij zijn:
- Het optreden is geboekt op basis van de samenwerking van Jonny Greenwood met Dudu Tassa en de productie van een muzikaal mooi en interessant album: ‘Jarak Qaribak’, dat vertaald ‘Your neighbour is your friend’ betekent. Op dit album staan liefdesliedjes afkomstig uit en bekend in de gehele Arabische wereld.
- Het album is opgenomen met een multi-Arabische band waarin ook Palestijnen spelen. Gastzangers en -zangeressen zingen liedjes uit elkaars landen.
- Dudu Tassa heeft al voorafgaand aan het uitbreken van de huidige oorlog gezegd dat hij geen politieke intenties heeft met dit album.
- Dudu Tassa is van Arabisch-Joodse komaf, heeft de Israëlische nationaliteit en gelooft dat de oplossing niet ligt in verdere polarisatie, geweld en bloedvergieten, maar in verzoening. Dit draagt hij ook uit in interviews.
- Hij meent dat deze muziek en zijn band het bewijs vormen van zijn – beperkte – mogelijkheden en goede intenties om mensen van verschillende nationaliteiten, geloven en overtuigingen samen te brengen. He walks the talk: op het album en bij zijn optredens met dit project.
- Jonny Greenwood deed mee aan een protestactie tegen het Israëlische regime. De dag erna speelden Greenwood en Tassa gezamenlijk hun album in Tel Aviv. Ondertussen deelden zij ook hun verdriet met betrekking tot de gegijzelden en de verliezen van levens. Rouwen en verdriet om verlies staan niet gelijk aan een kant kiezen.
- Wij geloven dat deze artiesten bij uitstek mensen zijn die een positieve invloed kunnen hebben op hun omgeving doordat zij cultuuruitingen als middel inzetten om begrip voor elkaar te kweken én verschillen te overbruggen.
Via zijn vertegenwoordigers hebben we bij Dudu Tassa nagevraagd wat de context is van de video waarop hij speelt voor de Israëlische president. Tassa licht toe dat hij vierhonderd gitaren naar het IDF heeft gestuurd ‘so they could play, instead of fight’. Vervolgens heeft hij op verzoek meegespeeld op de bijeenkomst in november 2023. In zijn ogen is dit geen uiting van instemming met geweld, maar het kracht bijzetten van zijn vredelievende intenties.
Over de video waarop te zien is dat Tassa voor mensen in militaire kleding speelt, geeft hij aan dat ‘alle jonge mensen in Israël militair zijn, omdat in Israël een zeer uitgebreide dienstplicht geldt. Dit betekent niet dat ze allemaal voor oorlog zijn of geweld goedkeuren’. Deze video is opgenomen in oktober 2023, net na de mobilisatie, maar voor het uitbreken van de huidige oorlog.
Inmiddels hebben zowel Jonny Greenwood als Dudu Tassa online en op hun social media inhoudelijk gereageerd op de ontstane ophef en de negatieve commentaren omtrent hun samenwerking. Wat ons betreft bevestigen deze reacties het beeld wat hierboven wordt geschetst.
Als Lowlands-organisatie hebben we – na veel onderzoek, onderlinge discussie en vele gesprekken – geen twijfel over de intenties van deze artiesten. We geloven in hun oprechtheid in het streven naar verzoening en een betere, constructieve toekomst. Wij weigeren geen artiesten louter op basis van hun nationaliteit.
Lowlands is een platform voor muziek, cultuur en debat. Met 65.000 Lowlanders hoeven we het niet altijd tot in detail met elkaar eens te zijn, maar moeten we wel met elkaar in gesprek blijven. Wij denken dat verdere polarisatie, ingraven in argumenten, en boycotten of cancelen van deze artiesten niet het juiste antwoord is. Wij zijn van mening dat het laten optreden van deze boodschappers van verzoening de beste keuze is.
In het ECHO-programma op Lowlands wordt een panel gewijd aan de Israëlisch-Palestijnse kwestie.

We have recently received questions from various people and organizations concerning the programming of 'Dudu Tassa & Jonny Greenwood' at Lowlands 2024 based on their jointly released album 'Jarak Qaribak'.
Videos have been posted online showing Dudu Tassa performing with the IDF Orchestra in the presence of Israeli President Yitzhak Herzog and after giving away 400 guitars to the IDF. Images are also circulating of Tassa performing for people in military uniforms. These videos raise questions and confusion about the stance of Tassa and Greenwood in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
We have also seen these videos and reports, which raised several questions. That is why there has been extensive contact with the management and representatives of Dudu Tassa and Jonny Greenwood. Based on this, the decision was made to allow their performance at Lowlands to go ahead. Our considerations and thoughts regarding this matter are:
- The performance was booked based on the collaboration of Jonny Greenwood with
Dudu Tassa and the production of a musically beautiful and interesting album:
'Jarak Qaribak', translating to 'Your neighbour is your friend'. This album
contains love songs from and known throughout the Arab world.
- The album was recorded with a multi-Arab band, including Palestinian musicians. Guest singers sing songs from each other's countries.
- Before the outbreak of the current war, Dudu Tassa already stated that he has no political intentions with this album.
- Dudu Tassa is of Arab-Jewish descent, is an Israeli national and believes that the solution does not lie in further polarization, violence and bloodshed but in reconciliation. He also expresses this in interviews.
- He believes that this music and his band are proof of his –limited– capabilities and good intentions to bring together people of different nationalities, religions and beliefs. He walks the talk: on the album and during his performances with this project.
- Jonny Greenwood joined a public protest against the Israeli regime. The day after, Greenwood and Tassa performed their album in Tel Aviv. They also shared their grief regarding the hostages and the loss of lives. Mourning and grief over loss are not the same as choosing a side.
- We believe that these artists are, first and foremost, people who influence their environment. That they use these cultural expressions as a means to understand each other and bridge differences.
Through his representatives, we asked Dudu Tassa about the context of the video of him playing for the Israeli president. Tassa explained that he sent 400 guitars to the IDF "so they could play instead of fight". On request, he subsequently played at the gathering in November 2023. In his view, this is not an expression of consent to violence but a reinforcement of his peaceful intentions.
Regarding the video showing Tassa playing for people in military clothing, he indicates that “all young people in Israel are military because Israel has a very extensive conscription. This does not mean that they are all for war or condone violence”. This video was recorded in October 2023, just after the mobilization, but before the current war.
Both Jonny Greenwood and Dudu Tassa have addressed the issues and negative comments regarding their collaboration substantively online, including via their social media. As far as we are concerned, these reactions confirm the picture outlined above.
As Lowlands’ organization, we have –after extensive research, internal discussion and many conversations– no doubts about the intentions of these artists. We believe in their sincerity in moving toward reconciliation and a better, constructive future. We do not reject artists solely based on their nationality.
Lowlands is a platform for music, culture and debate. With 65,000 Lowlanders, we do not always have to agree with each other in detail, but we do have to keep talking to each other. We think further polarization, digging into arguments, and boycotting or cancelling these artists are not the right answers. We believe that allowing these messengers of reconciliation to perform is the best choice.
